Babies update

Posted By on December 22, 2013

The boys had their first pediatrician’s appointment Friday morning. As a general case, they’re fine, but one of the issues with them being a month early is that they don’t have a lot of fat stored up. This presents a problem because it sometimes takes awhile for babies to get used to waking up because they’re hungry (it’s a new experience for them). Consequently, newborns lose weight for a bit when first born, which is okay because they have the aforementioned fat – unless they don’t.

The way to arrest the weight loss is a very aggressive feeding schedule. So, Liz and I are now working in shifts (3 hours on, 3 hours off), where you basically wake the babies up, feed them, put them back down, and wake them up again on the hour (regardless of how long the feeding took). So, this means that you spend about half an hour feeding babies, then another half hour doing whatever (for example, typing up blog posts), then spend another half hour feeding babies.

The hope is that, come Monday, their weight will have turned around and they’ll start gaining.

Anyway, that also gives me plenty of time to hold the boys and take pictures, which folks likely would like to see.

Max. He tends to keep his eyes shut more than Miles - this is one of the few where I have him looking around.

Ladybug sleep sack. My mom made these super cute knitted sleep sacks for the boys, and I had few minutes to put Miles in this one and take a picture.
