Moved in… mostly

| July 29, 2005

So, most of the stuff is here. Liz and my Mom are headed down to finish up cleaning out the old place, while my Dad and I are getting plumbing stuff to plumb in the dishwasher and buying a new range hood because the old one is shot. For a rental, this place is quite a fixer-upper. We've spent about $1000 on A/C's and other stuff. Luckily, the landlord is paying for the dishwasher, range hood, and plumbing stuff.

In other news, the cable signal was crap, so they had to pull a new wire, which came in the living room – completely across the house from my office. So, the cable modem and a Linksys WRT54G is going to be there, and another one is going to be in my rack, giving all the machines in my office internet access. The second will be in bridge mode, as detailed here: http://forum.bsr-clan.de/viewtopic.php?t=1750&highlight=bridge#11522 All this will be using the DD-WRT firmware.

Anyway, so that's about it. Working my job, working on the house, and sleeping. That's my life right now, basically.

The anti-moving party

| July 21, 2005

Okay, so we're hiring movers, so we don't need people to help move. However, folks are welcome to come by, help us unpack, drink beer, render opinions, help with wiring, etc. We should be at the new house by about 1PM on Saturday, and we'll probably be there all day on Sunday. If you want to come over, call and I'll give you directions. FYI – The cell phone service up there is spotty, so I might not be able to answer right away.

The list has changed

| July 12, 2005

Okay, the mattress pad, throw blanket, ice cream maker and hand mixer have been claimed.

We are adding:

  • A small George Forman Grill (fits 2 chicken breasts or burgers)
  • An Epson C80 color inkjet printer. (This is a good printer, it was just supplanted by an all-in-one jobbie).

This brings the list to: George Forman grill Epson C80 Heating/massage seat cover Twin size feather bed (the kind that sits on top of a mattress) Toaster (not a toaster oven) 10 cup basket style coffee maker w/ glass carafe Assorted pieces of lexan (some 1/4″, some 1/8″) Assorted pieces of steel flashing (like the kind used when doing stove work) Wire frame desk organizer (basically a glorified “in” and “out” box)

Moving givaways!!

This stuff is going to be thrown out if we move. All these are in good condition, and just have remained in storage, unused, for the past year.

Queen size electric mattress pad Electric throw blanket Heating/massage seat cover Twin size feather bed (the kind that sits on top of a mattress) Toaster (not a toaster oven) 10 cup basket style coffee maker w/ glass carafe Hand mixer Ice cream maker Assorted pieces of lexan (some 1/4″, some 1/8″) Assorted pieces of steel flashing (like the kind used when doing stove work) Wire frame desk organizer (basically a glorified “in” and “out” box)

All of these are free; you just have to come pick them up before the 23rd!

Snapshots of my life right now

  • Movers for an in-state move are like $600. A that price, they are so worth it.

  • Gran Turismo 4 looks awesome at 1080i widescreen. Plus, there is a used Mitsubishi Lancer Evo for 9,500Cr, so it's even easier to get started than GT2.

  • The PS3 is going to use standard-type memory cards including Sony Memory Stick, Compact Flash, and SD. It also plays PS2 and PS1 games. However, no mention is made of supporting the older memory formats. If I'm going to buy a new console and play my old games on it, I want to be able to load up my old saved games. Either that, or one needs to have 2 consoles, which is kind of a waste. Hopefully, it will come with a little adapter thing (or one can be purchased) to convert the old cards to something that can be plugged into the new console.

  • Plastic storage tubs are the best.

  • Business is all about who you know. Never underestimate the power of networking and having the balls to speak your mind (provided you have something impressive to say). At least, it's worked that way for me. Just a couple years in industry is opening lots of doors. You know people who know other people and they talk to the people you know and the people you know send you emails because the people they know are looking for help.

  • Ice cream good.
