There were massive quantities of beer consumed (homebrew Noisy Wingnut Steam Hefeweizen, and Cream Ale), good food, good friends, lots of gaming.

One of the things which consistently impresses me about my friends are the fact that they actually read real books (not many people do these days), and they are interesting. Present and being read were:

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Some random thriller called Excaliber

Kitchen Confidential (Bourdain’s book)

The Cuckoo’s Egg (this one was mine).

The game table also got used, though I didn’t get a lot of action shots, we got a few. Games played were:

Munchkin Cthulu

Munchkin Quest

Lord of the Fries

Shadowrun

So, Liz and I attended Templecon two weeks ago. It was a mixed bag.

Full details behind the cut..

The venue (Crowne Plaza, Warwick, RI) is quite nice, but too large for the con to totally rent out – so you have a bunch of gamers having a zombie LARP crossing paths with hotel guests and businessmen. But, from the top.

Friday

Liz and I pre-registered. The website said that registration opened at 8AM. We got there at 8:30. The line didn’t start moving until 9. They were woefully underprepared, with several people manning the registration, but the line stretching for several hundred feet. It took us until 9:45 to get badges, and that was only because they were doing people with names starting with A-H (or something like that.. point is, we were C, so we were good).

I had a 10AM game, so I was good to go.

I get to the game, and the GM isn’t there – he’s still in line. He showed up at about 10:30. Apparently, he asked the organizers what to do, since he had a game to run. They told him to stay in line. I would have just walked up and started running my game, and if they gave me static for it, I’d have told them to go get me my badge, because I’m stopping people from being pissed off at their con.

Anyway, the game was the new Gamma World. Decent. The cards are a little weird (why do I get a new mutation every encounter, etc.). I won’t be buying it, however – I don’t see the benefit of it over Mutant Future.

After that, Liz and I went down to the Iron Arena event to play some Warmachine. It ran throughout the con. Here is the full description:

Format – This 24/7 casual play experience rewards you for playing your favorite Privateer Press games against new friends from all over the globe. The more games you play, the more Skulls you collect. Redeem your Skulls for awesome prizes!

Prizes – Too many to list here!

Redemption – Refer to the IRON ARENA challenge card to find out all the ways to earn Skulls!

So, Liz and I showed up with our fully painted, fully based 15 point armies.

The rules sheet started awarding credit for games played at 35 points. So, anyone humoring me by playing at 15 points is wasting their time they could be using to get tickets.

(Note that 15 and 25 point armies are listed as valid in the core book)

As such, we were rather disappointed.

Now, that said, it brings up a metagame issue – why do people keep trying to run things in to larger games? I mean, maybe it makes sense for tournaments, but for casual play? Think of this flow:

1. New player (NP) plays demo at con.
2. NP goes to vendor, buys a book and a 15 point army.
3. NP glues them together that night, so NP can play in Iron Arena the next day.

Everyone wins.

How are we to attract new people to the game if all the local metas are running minimums at 35 points? It’s like starting 40k – you’re $100 in to it before you can even play.

My local meta rarely even hits 35 points – we have limited amounts of time to paint new units, so we end up doing a little tweaking here and there, but in general we play lots of small games, rather than fewer larger games. I also heard some folks at the con complaining of the same thing.

So, we played a Malifaux demo instead. The models are top notch, giving the Warmachine figures a run for their money, but the card mechanic seems rather forced. I’d much rather just roll dice. So, a plus for satisfying my curiosity.

We also did some shopping at the Warstore‘s booth (yayy not paying shipping) and some other places, the most notable being me buying Liz a corset from Mad Girl Clothing

At 5PM, there was a mulled wine tasting. The presenter didn’t know as much as we hoped he would, and we tasted some rather foul mulled wine. The mulling was fine, but Sakonnet Vineyards is not exactly a good start. A second item we tried was made with Akvavit which is essentially caraway-flavored Vodka. Ick.

At 6PM, there was a Scotch tasting. The presenter knew quote a lot, but unfortunately this caused him to go over time – by a lot. We started late, and by the time we were supposed to be done, we were only halfway there. That said, the big winner from this was The Dalmore 12 year old. A very good Scotch, and my stable was missing a highland (turns out, Highland Park is technically an Island Whiskey, as it comes from Orkney. Liz and I ended up leaving early – but what was left was Island (actually Highland Park, of which a good friend got me a bottle for my birthday, so I had that covered), Lowland, and Islay (of which I have several). So didn’t miss much, and were hungry.

We left and got sushi at seven moons.

Saturday

Since we had no Iron Arena in which to play, we slept in a bit then headed down where we met up with some friends. We caught up for a bit, wandered around, then got into a game of Pulp City, which was the real surprise of the con. The current rules are free, but the first published rules are coming out soon (they’re effectively a “revised” edition). I liked it enough that I bought the Heroes and Villains boxed sets and pre-ordered the rules. It plays a lot like Warmachine, but is subtly different in a lot of ways, which end up optimizing it a lot better for that genre.

Meanwhile, Liz took a class on making Jewelry, which she seemed to enjoy.

Walking around, it seemed that the registration was just as bad today as it was yesterday – except today there was the addition of a lady who was very shouty in telling people to not block the hallway. Good thing I wasn’t in the line, I likely would have left.

After that, we got some lunch and watched the fashion show, which had quite a range – from amateur hour to really, really beautiful stuff.

There was a marriage proposal at the end which kind of hurt my brain. There was a biologically female, self-identifying as female who proposed to a biologically male, self-identifying as female. Now, the first thing which flitted across my mind is “wait, we still don’t let same-sex couples get married, right?”, rapidly followed by “wait a minute, surgery or not, self-identification or not, she is still listed is biologically male, which means they can get married”. Still, definitely made a mental flip-flop there for a second, and in the end kind of just makes you think of how stupid all these restrictions are. (Private contract, government out, end soapbox).

Following the fashion show was the costume contest. Interesting display of creativity.

Once lunch was concluded, we sought out the game room and played a rousing game of Kill Doctor Lucky, which I highly recommend – so much so that I ended up buying a copy.

After that came high tea, which was.. as well organized as the rest of the con. The nibbles were decent, the tea water was tepid (though it got warmer as time went on), and the talks were excellent. I had some discussions about Warmachine with a gentleman named Simon who worked for Privateer Press – he gave me some painting suggestions, suggested some of their products, etc. There was a talk on the evolution of these Victorian high society customs as a reaction to an expanding middle class, and another one given by Leanna Renee Heiber on the subtleties of the Victorian fan. Apparently, there is a whole huge code behind what they mean based on the motion of the fan, what hand it’s in etc. She also described her books as “Victorian Ghostbusters”, which piqued my interest. I’ll have to read some of her work.

We ended up leaving the tea early, and headed back to find our friends. Touching base with my folks, we wondered if we could crash their house and play some games. This isn’t as intrusive as it sounds – Liz and I were staying with them for the weekend, and my mother was unable to attend the con because she had to work – she’d be quite happy if we brought a little of the con to her. So, we all headed over there, and my dad had made up some shepherd’s pie, which we enthusiastically devoured.

Once there, we played:

The Storming the Castle Princess Bride Game – This was simple and cute. Not all that much strategic depth to it, but it was cute and fun.

Back to the Future – always a favorite.

Pandemic – another favorite. We played two games of this.

This saw a late but enjoyable end to the night.

Sunday

The only thing in which we were remotely interested was a ballroom dancing class, which we observed being taught on Saturday, and Liz was unimpressed. So, we did’t go, and ended up playing a few games of Warmachine. This means I got to try out Karchev for the first time (HUGE difference in how my battlegroup plays). I totally slaughtered Liz’s Stryker group, so she switched him out for the eHaley she had just bought, who did a lot better than Stryker, but still lost. Some tweaking of her list will be necessary in order to match the Karchev list. Right now, I’m running Karchev, a Destroyer, and a Juggernaut. I’ve fiddled with having a couple mechanics, or a Drakhun, but it doesn’t seem to make all that much of a different. I have a Behomoth I need to put together, and I’ll likely switch the Destroyer out for it. I think that combination will be pretty nasty.

And then we drove home.

I think that pretty much covers it. I don’t know if we’ll be back next year.

or, “my dog ate my wife’s warjack”.

Basically, Socks the cat duped Diesel the dog into eating one of my wife’s Cygnar warjacks – a Lancer, to be precise. Basically, she shoved it off the top of the entertainment center, where it fell about 4 feet on to a the TV stand. The shield arm popped off and flew across the room. I believe it landed on the arm, which is why there wasn’t any other damage to the figure. Diesel dog then retrieved the arm (I presume Socks was egging him on, playing him for a patsy) and proceeded to chew on it.

We found the shield and lower part of the arm, so I had enough to reconstruct the upper part of the arm (we did, however, find that part of the arm later, so Diesel didn’t swallow it. That said, I had already started the reconstruction, so I didn’t end up using it).

First, I stripped the paint off with Simple green. First, I molded a disc our of green stuff to duplicate the one on the upper arm. I let it harden overnight, and drilled a hole through it. Then I took the forearm, drilled it, increased the depth of the drill hole in the shoulder, and pinned the two together, with the disc in between:

Arm reconstruction - pin and disc

Once this has set up, I took more green stuff and molded on pistons:

Arm reconstruction - pistons

Reattached the shield, then primed and painted it to match:

Arm reconstruction - after painting

Not too shabby, if I do say so myself.

So, I was poking about on DriveThruRPG and happened across Majestic 12 Games. Their catalog is impressive – they have games to address all of the genres in which I’m interested (and some in which I am not), and the systems purport to be universal – most including rules for creating your own in a balanced fashion. They also have demo rules available for most (all?) of their games. Now, whether or not their rules suit me is a different matter – I don’t know, I’m still reading the demo rules.

All that said, if anyone has any suggestions, I’m open to them. I like simple to play but tactically complex games – all the math should be front-loaded into unit generation. I’d prefer something much less complex than Warhammer 40K – something that is quick for new players to pick up.

Currently, I’m using:

Small scale (6mm) – Nothing

Large scale (25mm) – Nothing

Space Ships – Full Thrust

Propeller Driven Aircraft – Crimson Skies – though it is an airplane game without altitude, which is a little weird. It is also out of print, which I hate doing to players. Oh, here’s this great game.. and you can’t get the rules. You can still buy the minis, but not the rules. Something which allows for both these aircraft and historical aircraft would be interesting.

I’m also playing Warmachine, but that’s kind of its own category.

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and got plenty to eat.

AB’s brined turkey recipe is quite good. The turkey was wonderfully seasoned and juicy.

His cranberry sauce, not so much. It’s okay, but the Ocean Spray canned stuff is better.

To go with it, we had stuffing doctored up with mushrooms and apples, garlic mashed potatoes, gravy, and baguettes.

This was the first major meal cooked in the new stove which, is finally in. Originally, we were supposed to get the gas lines run last Wednesday and do the hook up on Saturday (which, requires the gas company to pressure test the whole thing before they’ll unlock the tank). So, I was going to be home to take delivery of the stove, meet them for hookup, etc. I canceled gaming, and Liz went hunting. Of course, a plan is just a list of things which don’t happen, so they couldn’t do the hookup on Saturday for lack of staff. Thus, we pushed the whole affair back to the next Tuesday. I still leave gaming canceled, so Lizzy can go hunting, while wait for the stove. Once it arrives, I convert it over to LP, and the next few days we end up trying to use our other appliances to cook supper (lots of soup and things made with a contact grill).

Tuesday roll around and the gas man shows up after lunch. Of course, sales guys can never seem to fill out work orders correctly, so:

He doesn’t have enough gas line.

And, of course, what he doesn’t have enough of is too small

So, very little happens while he waits for someone to come out from the home office and bring a couple of rolls of the proper line. I mean, we get the tank set up, some holes drilled, and the beginning of the line run (he had maybe 20 feet of the right size line, which got us in the house). A bit of work later (went pretty quickly with two people), and we’re in business. No leaks, gas on, stove works.

It’s pretty awesome. Two ovens, five burners, and it throws a lot more heat than the electric one did. This is the one.

In addition, we’ve gotten the house into something approaching clean, gotten our Warmachine figures varnished, and played a couple of games. I even won a game for once… and it’s only Friday. Most of the Christmas shopping is done as well. Tomorrow is “put the snowblower on the tractor” day, and we’ll likely go grocery shopping on Sunday.

Oh, and I’ve gotten an Amahi server set up and mostly configured. It’s pretty slick.

I think that’s it for now. I enned to post pictures of the miniatures at some point, but I’m kozy and don’t feel like getting the camera.

Been busy. Got about 30lbs of potatoes this year, made a couple quarts of hot sauce, made lots of beer, visited my folks, hit my buddy Mike’s halloween party, stuff like that.

We bought a stove. Gas. Current stove is electric. Now I need to run/arrange to have run LP gas lines, get a tank, git it filled, etc.

Need to change my transmission fluid too, and put on snow tires. We had our first snow today.

I suppose that means I should bring in firewood and change over to snow tires as well.

I’ve also been working on Warmachine minis in little bits of spare time I’ve been able to grab. Will post pics when they’re done. Almost ready for inking and then varnish. Then I get to work on the bases. I just ordered a Master Basing kit. Heh.

I’ve also been hacking about on my Pandigital Novel. In addition to the company released open platform firmware (basically stock Android, slightly modified for the device), there’s also a pile of community firmware.

I think that’s it for now…

Liz and I grabbed the Warmachine MKII quickstart rules and gave it a go with some proxy miniatures. The basic mechanics are very simple – anyone who is used to allocating command points and standard movement/line of sight/etc. type rules will be used to it. The use of preprinted cards for each unit (they apparently come in the box with the mini, and you can buy a deck of cards for every unit in your faction for like $15) allows for decent unit variability without adding too much confusing. The use of command points to “pump up” desired units allows for some interesting strategy.

Specifically, Liz was playing Cygnar (shooty) and I was playing Khador (stompy). We were still working out the system and figuring out the wrinkles for the first couple of turns, as my guys charged in. I realized I had to close, so I allocated points to have them run. Liz shot at my guys as they came in, but was limited by the rate of fire of her weapons. So, she hit my guys, but not enough to do any substantial damage.

Once my guys closed, I allocated all the points to them, allowing for massive numbers of melee attacks with boosted (extra dice) to hit and damage rolls. This allows my heavy hitter mech to just crush her light mech in a single turn.

Now, at that point it was 10:00, so we stopped because we’d both had a long week.

If you’ve played Monsterpocalypse, it feels a lot like that.

Its at least as good as 40k, and they’ve put out fewer editions in the given 10 years. Whether this is maintained, or they end up going in to the same edition churn as GW (3 editions in 10 years? Really?) remains to be seen. Further, the minis are in the same price class as GW minis, but (at least theoretically), you need fewer of them – however I’m not sure how true this is. The entry cost seems to be about the same ($50 for a basic couple of units), but with 40k armies, I find that you need to bulk it out to the tune of $200-$500 in order to really get enough variety to work well and keep things interesting. I’m not sure how this works for Warmachine.

(For the curious, I’m not getting rid of my GW minis – after all, I already own them. I’m willing to play 40K under either 3rd or 4th edition rules, as those are the rules I own, and am currently experimenting with the F.A.D. 4.0 rules. I also have some modern minis which I’m going to play with around these rules.. especially since they’re almost all painted..)
