Final entry about SR4 content

Posted By on November 5, 2005

I've been working on missions and the like, so I've been remiss in my final discussion of the Shadowrun 4th ed book.

I don't have a print copy yet (though Amazon has shipped it), so I can't comment on the binding, etc. This is just on the gear section.

  • Concealability is now a modifier to a standard perception test rather than a TN. That works
  • Machine pistols no longer suck! They were too weak in SR3. I think the idea was that they wanted to preserve balance by making them weaker. Problem with this was that it failed the reality rest, and actually made them worse because of recoil. Now, they are basically burst fire weapons doing base light pistol damage, which makes sense in all manners of the world.
  • Yamam Sakura Fubuki. Well, that's new. Light pistol (-2 to conceal). It's a 4 barrelled muzzleloader. Each barrel carries 10 rounds. It can be fired in SA/BF mode but BF is handled like SA fire. The idea is that this LP works like the MetalStorm products like the Talon UGV Launcher where they're all stacked in the barrel and go off one after the other. So, it's based on a real deal. However, it's first burst at 0 modifier, second shot at -1 (just like SA). 4P base damage. 40 round capacity. Which means 6P damage @ 0 for first burst, 6P damage @ -1 for second shot, total of 13 bursts before reload. The downside is that it takes 4 complex actions to reload the weapon (though you can do 10 rounds in 1 complex action). It's still pretty neat, and with that much ammo, you should be able to fight your way back to your rifle
  • AK-97 is “for anyone with a small budget”. I call bullshit. The AK's are the cat's ass now, and will be in 65 years, too. They just need a smartgun system, and maybe someone like Krebs to add some Picatinny rails so that you can hang more shit off them.
  • Using Gel rounds is probably not a bad idea – you don't end up killing people (no murder 1 rap, and you're more likely to put someone down with gel rounds than with real bullets.
