More windows suckage and linux triumph

Posted By matt on December 1, 2003

At work today, we lost access to the world – the cable modem went down. This should have affected the network. Except, when their gateway dies, and the ethernet interface is still up, windows machines start to hammer the network with traffic. I have no idea what they are doing. However, most of the Windows machines slowed to a crawl, and access to the linux servers was slowed by it. You could get there, and once you did, it was fine, but the mess of incoming traffic was just bogging down new connections.

Anyway, in keeping with my playing with Wine for old video games, I played with various emulation bits for non-windows (DOS) games too. I looked at:

DOSBox
DOSEmu

DOSBox is a full-on x86 emulator, specifically set up to handle DOS. Since I have real x86 boxen, I don't need full-on emulation, but I tried it. Verdict: Too slow to run Warcraft 2.

DOSEmu emulates a system on which DOS can run. You install FreeDos to it (they have it all imaged and set up) and it works. This took a little longer than DOSBox to set up (about an hour vs. 15 mins), but it runs much faster (in fact, close to “too fast”. The problem I have with Warcraft 2 is that it scrolls around too fast. However, it's not that bad. Oh, they've added real emulation (ala DOSBox) recently, but I didn't turn it on. It also does nice fullscreen on my laptop, which DOSBox doesn't seem to do.

I was going to play with Bochs (general purpose x86 emulator) but the sourceforge download page is down for maintenance.

Time to break out doom, I think…
